Space Wars: The Challenge To Find More Room in a Small Space

Space Savers community blog is happy to present a guest blogger post from Deb Lee, CPO. Thanks, Deb, for sharing your expert advice!
Are you battling with space, or rather the lack of it? If you’re in a small home or office, it can be a challenge to “fit it all in.” Let’s face it, if you have 50 things and only have room for 10, you’ll either need to do a little purging or get a bigger location. Is a bigger space really the right solution? Here are a few things to keep in mind when you start bursting at the seams.
• Find Your Favorites. When you’re short on storage areas, be sure to only keep items that are most important to you or the ones that will help you to be productive. Put items that you know you’ll never use or that you simply don’t like in the trash pile (even if your favorite cousin gave it to you). Unless you love it and use it, it’s time to break up with that thing and gain some much needed space. Think of how great you’ll feel when the things you love actually have a place to live!
• Engage Your Walls. If an organizing product functions well, but has a big footprint (e.g., standing CD holder), consider finding an alternate product that you can mount to your wall (e.g., wall mounted CD rack). You’ll get the same (or similar) function and still have room to maneuver about.
• Enhance Your Closet. Take a peek inside your closet and see how much room you have between the top shelf and the ceiling. If there’s enough room for another shelf, take a trip to your local home-improvement store (with measurements, of course!) or hire a handyman to install it for you. By the way, using low-profile hangers will give you more room for clothing. Be sure to put in the amount your closet can hold comfortably without wrinkling your clothing.
• Pool Your Resources. Are your supplies scattered about your office? Clutter often springs up when you have multiples of the same items in a variety of places. Start keeping your like items together and consolidate when possible. You’ll get a little more room along with the added bonus of finding what you need quickly and easily.
• Get creative. Who says space-saving products have to be dull, boring or expensive? Spruce up an old ladder and use it as your bookcase. Not enough room for a coat rack? Paint some basic hooks with your favorite color and mount them at the entryway. Don’t be afraid to add your own flair and be a little creative.
