Seasonal Storage Solutions for Fall

Now is the perfect time to organize your indoors for the cooler months. Knowing where to store summer playthings and how to make room for winter necessities can be a challenge. Follow these tips to maximize storage space and prepare your home for the winter season.

Rework your wardrobe. Use the changing of the seasons as an opportunity to sort through the clothes you wear and those you don’t. Empty your closets and dressers and create three piles: save, donate and toss. Once you have purged items you no longer wear, take lightweight summer clothing and place it in a Space Bag Hanging Bag. Once vacuum-sealed, this bag will protect your warm-weather items from dust and moths, while freeing up extra space in your closet for winter wear.

Protect patio furniture from the elements. Damp winter air can ruin outdoor patio cushions, but they take up too much space to store inside. Instead, vacuum seal your patio cushions inside Space Bag storage packs. The cushions will stay compressed and take up less room. Plus, Space Bag storage packs protect the cushions from dirt, dust, mildew and pests so they’ll be fresh and ready to use in spring.

Stash the summer sporting goods. Kids are less likely to spend time playing outdoors in the winter months, so store sporting good supplies out of the way. These items should be stored off the floor of the garage to leave space for items used regularly in winter. Consider placing soccer balls and similar items in a mesh laundry basket and hanging this high on a garage wall. Deflate pool toys and pack them away for a warmer time.

Cut clutter in the entryway. Protect your home from rain, snow and mud tracked in on messy shoes and jackets by giving a home to these items in your entryway. Place a coat rack near the door or install hooks on the wall, so wet winter coats can be hung to dry instead of draped on nearby furniture. Umbrella holders can be placed inside or on the front patio. Place a shoe organizer on the floor of a nearby closet to house rain boots and eliminate tripping hazards.

Prepare rooms for winter downtime. You may choose to retreat to your desk once the summer sun has faded away, so use this time to clean out the home office. Go through paperwork and purge your desk of any unneeded items. If cozying up with a good book sounds appealing, prepare a reading nook, complete with comfortable throw and new literature. Unless you plan to reread books, donate any light summer reading materials you may still have lying around.

Get ready for storm season. Winter months often bring stormy weather. Read our article on preparing for a natural disaster to make sure your family is prepared for any situation. Snow storms and other severe weather may cause power outages, so be sure to keep extra blankets around the house and candles to light each room.

By clearing out some closet space, storing summer items out of the way and cutting clutter around the house, you can ensure your home is organized for the upcoming winter months.
