Head Outdoors This Summer
Packing for an outdoor adventure can be challenging. But with proper planning, it can be easy.
- Don’t forget the essentials. If you’re bringing a tent, remember to bring all the supplies that go along with it, such as stakes, a mallet, ground sheet and sleeping pads. If you’re bringing an air mattress, test it before you leave. Pack all tent supplies in one bag. Lighting is important, so be sure your flashlights, headlamps and lanterns are in working order before you leave home, and bring extra batteries and fuel. And don’t forget to pack chairs and blankets for lounging around the campfire.
- Pack lightly but efficiently. Pack clothes based on the coldest weather expected. You can bring more clothes in a backpack by using Space Bag Dual-Use Bags, which can compress without a vacuum. A bonus feature is that the items inside are protected from water and dirt.
- Food preparation. For camping and hiking trips, it’s important to bring non-perishable foods that don’t require a lot of preparation. To store perishable foods in a cooler, use an ice block, which melts slower than ice cubes. Packing and segregating ingredients by meal will make preparation easier, as will keeping your spices and cooking oil together. For a sanitary kitchen, be sure to keep hand sanitizer within reach. If you are camping in bear country, of course, be sure to pack all food and essentials in bear-proof containers. And the secret to a tidy camp: plenty of trash bags!
- Keep your vehicle loaded with supplies. Keep foul weather gear and accessories accessible by storing them in a Space Bag Dual-Use Bag on your RV or boat. The bags will compress items to a fraction of their size so you can fit more in a small amount of space. You can also pack water toys, towels and extra life jackets in the bags to make sure you’re prepared for water activities.
- Protect yourself. All campers need to have a first-aid kit handy. Along with essential medical supplies, bring sunscreen and insect repellent. Other essentials: hand sanitizer, maps, compass and multi-purpose knife.
