Dorm Room Organization 101
College students are known to be many things, but tidy isn’t necessarily one of them. Many college students stay up late, sleep in even later and are constantly on the go. Combine a college student’s lifestyle with sharing space in a cramped dorm room and you have a recipe for disorganization and clutter.
However, keeping stuff in order and maximizing limited space can be done, with a little bit of planning and a few basic tools.
Try these tips to keep dorm rooms neat and make them a retreat from the hustle and bustle of classes and campus activities:
- Donate! If it hasn’t been worn in the past six months, get rid of it. Start a pile for clothes that aren’t being worn regularly, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of closet space you can reclaim.
- Downsize bulky bedding. Extra pillows, sheets and comforters can take up a lot of space in the dorm. Use the Space Bag High Capacity Cube to shrink those bulky items for easy moving and storage under the bed.
- Ditch the duplicates. If possible, contact your roommate ahead of move-in. Create a list of items that can be shared and designate who brings what. By consolidating items like televisions, printers and cleaning supplies, you can free up a lot of space.
- Considering lofting. Let’s face it, dorm rooms are tiny. If the dormitory allows it, think about putting your bed on risers or getting it as high off the floor as possible. This can create a lot more floor and storage space.
- Closet conundrum. How to fit everything in a dorm closet is a mystery. We have the solution with the Space Bag Hanging Bag. Store bulky winter clothes early in the semester while still soaking up the rays and switch to storing summer clothes when the temperatures drop.
- Make shower supplies portable. For many students, living in a dorm means not only sharing a bedroom, but also a bathroom. Purchase a shower caddy to easily transport personal toiletries to the bathroom down the hall.
- Don’t forget the little things. Here’s a list of other items that can help organize the room and keep it fresh and clean:
- Power strips – college kids have a lot of gadgets to plug in with limited outlets.
- Wall hooks – these will keep things off the floor and can also be decorative.
- Air fresheners – remember how most college kids aren’t good about doing laundry? These can mask the odors for short amounts of time.
- Cleaning supplies – think about multi-purpose disinfectant wipes. They’re easy to use and can be bought in bulk.
- Duct tape – it fixes everything.
